The Best Investment in Energy — Is in Energy Conservation

Free Energy Use Consultation:
This consultation will allow us to determine your Home Heating Index (HHI). This a method of comparing the energy use of your home to other efficient homes - normalized for geographic location.

We will also compare your household electrical energy usage as compared to the electrical consumption of an efficient home of similar size and occupancy.

By benchmarking the total amount of energy you consume to heat, cool, and operate your home we can quickly determine if you have a real opportunity to save and whether or not an Energy Audit is warranted.

Residential Energy Auditing:
As a Licensed Professional Engineer and Certified Energy Auditor in the state of Maine, AEM is trained and qualified to conduct certified home energy audits.

We utilize several energy audit rating and reporting systems depending on the needs of the individual consumer or the lending program or institution. This includes the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) audits and reports, and the Energy Star benchmarking tool.

Through the use of these tools we can help consumers compare the efficiency of a given home to the efficiency of similar homes. We can help homeowners achieve the coveted Energy Star label, which will have a positive impact on the resale value of their homes.

What is an Energy Audit?
The Energy Audit conducted by Alternative Energy of Maine is a comprehensive survey of your home and the systems that serve it:

The Building Shell

  • Method of Construction
  • Insulation & Combined R-Value
  • Windows & Doors
  • Moisture or Mold Issues
  • Air Sealing Issues & Air Leakage Measurement using a Milwaukee Blower Door &Analysis Software.

Indoor Air Quality Issues

  • CAZ - Combustion Appliance Zone Testing
  • Minimum Air Change Per Hour Requirement

Home Heating System

  • Equipment Age & Condition
  • Combustion Test Data
  • Unit Efficiency - Actual Vs. Factory

Electrical System and Equipment

  • Total Electrical Usage
  • Appliance Age, Condition, & Usage Rating
  • Lighting & Lighting Controls

What is the result of an Energy Audit?
The end result of an energy audit is a formal report listing the findings of the audit and the current Home Energy Rating of the home.

It will include specific and concise recommendations for improvements to achieve energy conservation.

Energy Conservation Recommendations (ECM's) will be categorized by those that need attention first, and will bring the homeowner the shortest return on investment (ROI) period.

Certain programs or lending institutions require additional methods of determining the cost-effectiveness of energy retrofits. In these cases we can provide detailed estimates on Savings to Investment Ratio (SIR), or Benefit / Cost Ratio (BCR) which quantify the life cycle savings as compared to the initial investment.

Follow-Up
After the energy conservation measures are instituted; AEM will perform a discounted follow-up audit and provide a final audit report and home energy rating at your request.
